Accreditation Torch
You have chosen an early childhood program for your child that is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. The academy administers a national volunteer, professionally sponsored accreditation system for all types of schools and child care centers. The academy is a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation’s largest organization of early childhood educators

NAEYC

WHAT IS ACCREDITATION?

NAEYC stands for The National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation's oldest and largest organization of early childhood educators. It promotes excellence in early childhood education. Early childhood programs accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs have voluntarily undergone a comprehensive process of internal self-study, invited external professional review to verify compliance with the academy’s Criteria for High Quality Early Childhood Programs.

As thousands of child care centers, preschools, kindergartens and after-school programs have seen, accreditation is a powerful tool for raising the quality of early childhood education. It provides a process through which early childhood professionals and families can evaluate programs, compare them with professional standards, strengthen the program and commit to ongoing evaluation and improvement.

NAEYC accreditation is a good indicator of quality child care, for both parents and professionals. A high quality, early childhood program provides a safe and nurturing environment while promoting the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of young children.

Summary of the Criteria

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) administers the nation's largest professionally sponsored, voluntary accreditation system for all types of early childhood centers and schools. NAEYC's accreditation process enables a program's administrators, staff and parents to join with representatives of the Academy to determine whether the program meets nationally recognized Criteria for high quality. NAEYC defines a high quality early childhood program as one that meets the needs of and promotes the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of the children and adults—parents, staff, and administrators—who are involved in the program. Each day of a child's life is viewed as leading toward the growth and development of a healthy, intelligent, and contributing member of society.

NAEYC's Accreditation Criteria address all aspects of an early childhood program:

  • interactions among staff and children
  • curriculum
  • staff and parent interactions
  • administration
  • staff qualifications and development
  • staffing patterns
  • physical environment
  • health and safety
  • nutrition and food service
  • program evaluation

NAEYC-accredited programs have demonstrated a commitment to providing a high quality program for young children and their families
